WWE may not be looking to raid CMLL’s roster after all, despite lots of speculation. But there is one name the company is not planning to pass on.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is not expected to aggressively pursue talent from CMLL despite its growing relationship with AAA.
There is, however, one notable exception.
That exception is Persephone.
Meltzer reported that WWE is expected to make an offer for the reigning CMLL World Women’s Champion as soon as she’s legally able to receive one.
Beyond Persephone, the belief is that WWE is currently focused on filling AAA programming with its own talent and established AAA stars rather than bringing in a new crop of CMLL wrestlers.
That approach could eventually change if WWE secures a larger American television deal for AAA and expands its budget, but for now Persephone looks to be the standout target.
Earlier this year, Catalina left CMLL and immediately made her way to AAA, but fans should not expect to see more such moves for the time being.
Persephone is currently in a unique position.
Since January, she’s been working under a dual contract with CMLL and AEW, regularly appearing for both promotions while continuing her reign as CMLL World Women’s Champion.
That arrangement also explains why WWE has not made a move already.
Earlier this year, Bryan Alvarez reported that Persephone never turned WWE down because there was never an offer to reject.
She was already under contract with CMLL, preventing WWE from entering negotiations, before later adding an AEW deal alongside her existing agreement.
For now, nothing has changed contractually. Persephone remains with AEW and CMLL, but once she’s free to negotiate, Meltzer believes WWE will be waiting.
So, only time will tell whether we end up seeing Persephone join WWE somewhere down the line.
