The Rock is reportedly doing a lot of thinking about what’s next.
A new report claims the former WWE Champion has been questioning projects and career decisions after a recent setback in Hollywood, with people close to him saying it hit him a lot harder than most people realize.
According to RadarOnline, one Hollywood insider said Johnson has always been driven by winning, which is why this one has reportedly been so difficult to move past.
“Dwayne has built his entire identity around winning. When a movie underperforms, he takes it incredibly personally.”
Another source claimed Johnson is now questioning “every decision, every project and every move,” while one studio executive now believes his next few movies could go a long way toward shaping the next chapter of his career.
So what actually led to all of this? The report comes after Disney’s live-action Moana got off to a much slower start than expected at the box office.
The remake opened to $95 million worldwide, well below early projections despite carrying a reported $250 million production budget before marketing.
Industry estimates have suggested Disney could end up losing more than $100 million on the film.
Johnson has already talked about the mixed reaction himself.
While talking to People, he admitted he thought the movie was off to a great start after seeing the first couple of reviews, only to watch things quickly swing the other way.
“Our first two reviews came out… They were amazing. I was like, wow. Then it went another way, as sometimes happens.”
Whether RadarOnline’s report reveals an accurate picture of Johnson’s mindset is impossible to know.
But after one of Disney’s biggest movies of the year stumbled out of the gate, it’s not hard to see why so much attention is suddenly on what The Rock does next.
