Sami Zayn’s recent absence from the ring hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The former Undisputed WWE Champion has remained on WWE television over the past few weeks, but one thing has been missing: he hasn’t wrestled since SummerSlam. Now, there’s finally an explanation.
According to PWInsider, the broken hand Zayn referenced during his recent segment with CM Punk is completely legitimate and not part of a WWE storyline.
That clears up why WWE has continued using Zayn on television without actually putting him in the ring.
His last match came at SummerSlam on August 2, where he competed against Kevin Owens, Finn Bálor and Gunther in a Fatal Four-Way to determine the next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Owens ultimately picked up the win that night, while Zayn pretty much disappeared from in-ring action after the Premium Live Event.
At the time, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Zayn continued appearing on WWE programming, including his recent interaction with CM Punk, but fans obviously noticed that he wasn’t competing in any matches.
Now we know there was a good reason for that all along.
There’s still no word on exactly when the injury happened, though.
PWInsider’s report didn’t reveal whether Zayn suffered the broken hand during the SummerSlam match or at another point, and WWE also hasn’t provided a timetable for his return to action.
While it is obviously unfortunate that the Underdog from the Underground is not able to compete inside the squared circle again, fans are still happy to see him on the blue brand every week.
So, for now, Zayn remains part of WWE television, just not inside the ropes. Until more is known about the injury, SummerSlam is still his most recent match.
