Paul Heyman’s on-screen role in WWE is obvious. His backstage job hasn’t been revealed until now.
The WWE Hall of Famer has spent years working closely with some of the company’s biggest stars behind the scenes, and during a recent interview, he finally explained what Triple H actually has him doing when the cameras aren’t rolling.
While appearing on Six Feet Under, Heyman was asked about the backstage role that Triple H has previously described as being WWE’s “consigliere.”
The nickname clearly meant a lot to Heyman.
He admitted he had no idea Triple H planned to put “consigliere” on his WWE Hall of Fame ring, saying it genuinely caught him off guard when he saw it.
More importantly, Heyman also explained what that role actually involves.
According to Heyman, he works directly for WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, stepping in whenever a performer needs help taking the next step.
Sometimes that’s helping someone get through a single promo. Other times, it turns into a much longer project.
“If he sees somebody… they need to break through on their promos… ‘Find it in them. Help pull it out of them.’ That becomes my assignment.”
Heyman said every wrestler is different.
Some only need a small adjustment, while others spend months working with him to unlock another level of their character.
That’s the part of the job he enjoys the most: helping talented performers become even better.
To explain his mindset, Heyman compared it to Michael Jordan constantly pushing himself even after becoming the best.
He believes the top stars never stop looking for ways to improve, and that’s exactly the mentality he tries to bring out in WWE talent.
Heyman also shared one example from his work with Roman Reigns.
Instead of immediately talking about “The Tribal Chief,” he’d spend time asking Reigns questions about his real life before figuring out how the character would answer those same questions.
In Heyman’s view, understanding the person first made the character feel much more natural.
Fans see Paul Heyman standing beside WWE’s biggest stars every week on television. Behind the scenes, though, it sounds like he’s helping shape them long before they ever walk through the curtain.
