Roman Reigns’ next challenger for the WWE World Heavyweight Title still hasn’t been decided, but there may already be a favorite behind the scenes.
WWE recently announced a crossover tournament with AAA to determine who will challenge the World Heavyweight Champion on the September 14 edition of RAW in Mexico City.
The bracket is still underway, with several first-round matches yet to take place.
One name, however, is already starting to stand out.
Penta took the first step toward the championship match on the August 10 episode of RAW, defeating Laredo Kid to advance in the tournament.
Psycho Clown and La Parka are still set to meet on the August 15 edition of AAA, while Dragon Lee faces Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rey Fénix takes on El Fiscal on the August 17 episode of RAW before the bracket continues.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, there’s a growing belief backstage that Penta will be the one advancing all the way to Roman Reigns.
After speaking with a WWE talent, WrestleVotes reported there’s a “strong feeling” internally that Penta is expected to win the tournament and challenge Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in Mexico City.
If that happens, it would be one of the biggest singles matches of Penta’s WWE career.
The tournament also changed WWE’s original direction for Reigns’ next title defense.
El Grande Americano had previously been rumored as the champion’s opponent before WWE instead unveiled the AAA crossover tournament.
Nothing has been officially announced, and Penta still has more matches to win before earning a shot at Reigns.
But if the backstage feeling proves accurate, the road to Roman Reigns in Mexico City is already becoming a little clearer.
Penta has proven himself to be an excellent WWE Superstar since joining the company last year. His going on to face Roman Reigns would do wonders for his career.
So it remains to be seen whether WWE does decide to pull the trigger on Penta in the end.
